Japan and Emily

I know we are all heartsick for Japan.

The Ice Storm we were in in Kentucky- obviously not truly comparable- but caused power loss during the winter. (We moved in with the Ang and Jed G. and sucked they're power.) It was cold. It was stressful.

I just cannot fathom the earthquakes and tsunami and nuclear melt-downs that are happening individually, let alone all combined. Oh for the lost people!

Please, read my blog friend Emily's experience in Japan. (start back to March 12th) They too are an Air Force family on their first and only stationed assignment in Japan. Her husband is a dentist, they have 4 cute little boys, live on base, and are LDS.

I sent through a donation to LDS charities last week. I wish I could have added more zero's behind it.

I am grateful for the church- because it's organization works! It comforts and blesses the lives of those in need. And it starts with people like Emily.

Rollover

This past week was a "wing snow day"- meaning they give active duty the day off to go skiing. Ryan took advantage and took Tanner out of school to take him up to Bogus Basin for Snowboarding lessons. They left about 7 and stopped for some gloves and oatmeal and hot chocolate at McDonalds. It had snowed, the roads were slick, but were clear. Ryan called me to check in about 8 to say they were on there way.

Before 9 I got a call from him again. He said, "We rolled over. Tanner's okay. I am too."
He was so calm. I thought he was kidding.
me: Are you teasing?
him: No
me: Honey, don't tease.
him: I'm not. Really. Tanner's sitting in someone cars.

I could hear background traffic and of course I got scared. They were on highway 84. He continued talking with me and the people who had stopped to help when he said "oh no" and something like "call you right back" and I let him off the phone. He didn't sound too worried at all though. (don't you love that about doctors?)

He calls me back to tell me an SUV lost control and just rolled about 200 yards away.

The police were en route, he sent me a picture, I had the insurance on the phone.

What happened: Ryan was going 45 when he came onto a portion of the highway that is cement and known as a micro-climate (it's mile marker 80- and information we have since found out). He said he started drifting, gently corrected then fishtailed, slid into the ditch between the highways, hit the barrier and rolled. It happened so fast.

By the time I got to them, there were 3 tow trucks working on him and 2 other vehicles. All of the accidents were singular and due to ice on the road.

Tanner didn't cry until he saw me. He said he was so scared. And it wasn't like a Disney ride at all.

We're not sure if they are totaling the truck out yet, and all that mess will get worked out I know- but yesterday Tanner mentioned to me that he had been thinking about rolling over. And that the truck slowly rolled to the top. And that Dad's hair stood up funny. And that the truck made irking noise. But that he also remembered, when the truck started to slide around, Dad grabbed my hand, and didn't let go. Tanner didn't remember any talking, just that Ryan had his hand.

About 3 weeks ago Ryan got a late night call from the hospital. A young airman had been in a car accident and was killed. They needed Ryan to come do a death certificate. That airman died from the same road condition on mile marker 81.

I could not hug these boys enough. I am so grateful to my Heavenly Father that they were kept from harm. I cannot express my gratitude enough.

I am grateful Tanner will always remember that when life got scary, and he was faced with possible harm, his Dad had his hand. The entire time. And I know that our Heavenly Father has our hands if we will offer them.

ps- Tanner asked Ryan as they were hanging upside down, before they punched there way out of the truck, if they were still going snowboarding? And also, "danget, my hot chocolate spilled!"

Nearly Hatched Baby Shower

I hosted for a girl in our squadron this past weekend. My aunt Julie told me about Paperless Post. I'll never make an invite again.

An easy brunch. White feathers and egg nests and burlap. I had egg nest soaps as departing favors.

Valentine's Day 2011

There was the traditional heart attack, little presents for the kids, fancy dinner: flank stake, red mashed potato's, strawberry tossed green salad, homemade rolls, and individual chocolate fondue pots. Our neighbors came and then we played Wii Dance, Ryan sent me a dozen roses, and chocolates, that had a sweet love note that I will keep forever.

Disneyland!

We had the most awesome vacation!!!
It was hard to come home....

We flew to LA and did Disneyland and Sea World. We saw the Waalkes side of my family, my sister Melissa and her family, and Ryan's sister Angela and her family, and Aunt Julie and Maddie. We definitely went at the perfect time of year....

We could have spent another 2 days just at Disneyland- 3 was not enough for us :(... and since my kids are not big nappers- we were there from morning to close. All the week long.

The highlights: The Star Wars Jedi Academy, The Princess Lunch, Feeding the Dolphins at Sea World, California Adventure street shows and the Water Show at night. Oh, and the Corndogs too.

Ryan put together the quick video at the end- we laugh every time at Emma's light Saber skills.

SOS: Need Sleep

silly note I wrote I want filed away for my kids to see as witness to the sleepless torment they put me through.

After my last post- my cousin Jess emailed me a sleep book. You'd think by my fifth kid I would have a clue about babies and kids and sleep. All I seemed to have a clue about was holding Charlotte to keep her asleep. That equaled not getting much done and her not sleeping very long and me losing my mind. And not being patient at all with anyone in my home. She did not have one nap in her crib before 6 months (I know! I'm crazy.) So, I devoured the book, wrote a letter to my husband and taped it to his side of the mirror and then told myself, just like the book said, I won't give my kids a diet of sugar and I shouldn't give my kids a life of exhaustion. I had a Family Home Evening on sleeping and how each of my kids was going to get more of it.

Charlotte's still up at night nursing, but she relaxes in her crib and soothes herself to sleep the majority of the time (with her binky) during the day. Major improvement.

How I kept up on so many things for so long with such inadequate sleep is surprising to me. I guess it's a testament to the enduring stamina of being a mother- a sleep clueless one at that.
